grat·i·tude
ˈɡradəˌt(y)o͞od/
noun
"The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness."
Although this definition is true, it is not complete.
Gratitude is a state of mind - a state of being. When you are grateful for the things you have, your mind is focused on only good things. This is especially helpful when trying to follow the Law of Attraction.
Simply put - The Law of Attraction states that "like attracts like." In other words: what you think about will come into your life in one form, or another. If your mind is occupied with the negative aspects of your life, such as debt, illness, or suffering, those negative things will continue for you, and in fact might multiply. If you concentrate on the positive things in your life, like your home, your loved ones, the health and life you already have, among other things - the good in your life will multiply. So in this respect - "Thoughts become things."
In her book "The Secret," Rhonda Byrne explores this very phenomenon:
This kind of thing even happens in the physical sciences every day - and it is called Spontaneous Synchronization. In his book "Sync: How Order Emerges From Chaos In the Universe, Nature, and Daily Life," Steven H. Strogatz describes how even two pendulums swinging at different rates will eventually come into sync - or how even fireflies will flash in unison by morning, even if they seemed to flash erratically earlier in the evening:
Our relationship with the world is dependent upon our feelings, and if we have a constant appreciation for the world around us - from loving the good things, to learning from the bad - we will find that our lives will improve tremendously, on the inside, and the outside.
